Instead of the standard hymnals and missals found in most Catholic Churches, St. Thomas employs the use of visuals (slides of hymns, songs, responses, etc.) projected on the walls of the church during Mass or other liturgies. This enables our parishioners to be hands free and focuses their attention forward to where all the “action” is happening. In addition to lyrics, prayers, and responses, the visuals allow us to also show pictures, camera feeds, and video clips pertinent to the liturgy or up-coming church events.
This ministry utilizes simple computer skills and the senses of both sight and sound. Members of the A/V ministry help keep people attuned to Mass by monitoring and adjusting sound levels for different speakers or singers and visually connecting parishioners to respond in song and word. Our ministry sometimes scares people a bit because of all the use of technology. Actually before the use of Power Point and computers, slide projectors were in operation for projection, and the visual slides themselves had to be developed, made into physical slides before each Mass (unless you were fortunate to use songs or responses from the previous weekend!), and, then order them for Mass with the hope it would work and result in NO major projector jams! Actually now, if you can pay attention to the flow of Mass, push a button and turn a knob, you can do this ministry quite easily. New members to our A/V “GO” Team are always needed and welcome! Training sessions are arranged on an individual basis for the Mass times you normally attend.
